Explore DNA and why it makes you you! DETAILS Our genetic information is carried in our DNA, but how does it determine our traits and characteristics? And why is DNA so important in human evolution and in science today? This workshop combines small-group discussions and hands-on experience to teach genetic modifications, the inheritance of traits and diseases, and the role of DNA in current medicine. Students need no prior knowledge of DNA or genetics. Students will learn about: 1. The structure and role of DNA 2. The inheritance of genes 3. Genetic mutations and diseases Students will discuss: 1. The pros and cons of genetic modification in agriculture 2. The uses of DNA in medicine today Students will have hands-on experience with: 1. Extracting DNA 2. Determining blood types 3. Analyzing DNA fingerprints through gel electrophoresis
