Mandarin Chinese News Boot Camp for Young Learners

This boot camp series is for young Mandarin Chinese learners who have basic skills to understand pinyin and read/write at least 50-100 words either in Traditional or Simplified scripts.

We offer three consecutive terms in spring 2018; each lasts for 4, 5, or 6 weeks. Space is limited to eight participants per term. Each term starts virtually one week prior to the first workshop, and ends one week after the last workshop.

You’ll have access to a subscription-based media database to select news articles suitable for your level, and receive ongoing support online. Together, we'll set a personal goal based on your available time and proficiency. Up to twice a week, your instructor Mrs. Plumberg, a native speaker and former journalist, will answer questions through a video call, or simply having conversations with you in Mandarin on any topics of your choice. Every Sunday afternoon, we gather together at a 2-hour workshop held at Hanwen School in Central Berkeley, where you present the news article(s) you studied to peers, and receive a briefing from Mrs. Plumberg about that week's hottest news in Greater China. At the end of each term, Mrs. Plumberg will provide individual evaluation reports with quantitative and qualitative analysis about your learning progress and recommend ways to move forward.

We strive to provide student autonomy and an emotionally supportive environment where learning Mandarin is more than studying text books. For detailed schedule, please check out Come join us!
